Record-keeping is probably the most overlooked tool in dog training, yet it is the most important tool in a trainer’s toolbox to help build continued success! Records are objective. Keeping a record of your training sessions will help you know exactly what you’ve trained, the environments in which you’ve trained and exactly how your dog is performing in that environment. Documenting your training goals and experiences helps you keep clear criteria, focus and motivation.
Record keeping doesn’t have to be a time-intensive process. Although taking the time to record your data between sessions does take some effort, using the information to evaluate your last session and plan your next enables you to make your training incredibly efficient. Ultimately, you will progress faster because you won’t waste time doing too many reps at one level or backing up because you progressed when you shouldn’t have. With proper record keeping you are able to keep you and your dog having FUN while moving forward in your training sessions!
