A great start line is accomplished with your understanding of proper mechanics and lots of reinforcement. While a start line behavior may seem easy in class, when competing you will often need to lead out for great distances while trusting your dog to maintain its position. Many of the dogs are watching everything going on in and around the ring and forget criteria. How can you improve the chances that your dog keeps their rock-solid start line in any circumstance? Simply practicing a sit command repeatedly does not teach a dog that he must stay where left no matter what is going on around him. Instead, you need to allow your dog to make errors, or even try to cause errors, in order to teach him what is and what is not allowed.
In this workshop we will teach the benefits of understanding proper criteria, use of reinforcement, proofing, and allowing mistakes. We will also be discussing benefits to lead outs. For example, a small adjustment in the angle of your dog’s start line set-up can cause bars to come down, refusals, and even off courses. Learn how to properly gauge where to set your dog up for success and how to find the perfect position to release your dog to ensure a successful opening. This workshop is for beginner and advanced handlers alike. Great sits and set-ups will help you achieve the impressive and efficient start line you dream of.
