Sit! Maintain! Release! This is accomplished with your understanding of proper mechanics and lots of reinforcement. I find that the great majority of dogs perform the sit exercise by accident, and when asked in a distracting environment the behavior falls apart. After all, when competing, you will often need to lead out in 10-30 feet distances with trust. Many of the dogs are watching everything going on in and around the ring and some of them seem quite surprised when their handler leads out. How can you improve the chances that your dog really understands that performing a sit command is, in fact, one of the his favorite exercises?
