  • In this lecture, Katie will go over the fundamental rules, cues, and maneuvers of the Greg Derrett System of Agility Handling. Terminology will be defined, maneuvers will be discussed and broken down into each component of proper execution (including foot, arm, rotation, acceleration and deceleration work), and positional cues will be identified. You will learn how to properly walk a course to determine the dog’s path, your plan for handling, and how to maintain a balance between path/obstacle focus and handler focus.

  • Now that you know all the obstacles and handling positional cues, we will prepare you to take your skills to the next level and compete at agility trials. This class is designed to help you understand when and where to apply specific handling cues. Sequences consisting of 8 – 12 obstacles will be analyzed and performed with your dog. Your instructor will help you develop a better understanding of applying these skills in competition.     These Double Box exercises will walk you through Greg Derrett's handling foundations and positional cues to help you understand how your position as a handler and the consistency of the handling system you choose will benefit your dog over his/her career. We will discuss various double box exercises to help you improve your timing on various front crosses, rear crosses, threadles, acceleration and deceleration.   • You will learn the proper mechanics, positions and reward protocols for teaching your dog a solid understanding of the performance of 270’s, Threadles, and Lead-out Pivots. Once practiced and comprehended, we will apply these techniques on a variety of obstacle sequences and situations. The first time you take Putting It All Together classes, they must be completed in sequential order (A->B->C).   • In this class, you will learn the skills and fine-tune the proper mechanics for executing rear crosses and serpentines proficiently on small sequences. You will be able to recognize when using a serpentine is appropriate and/or beneficial to your performance.   • This class will cover exercises that will relate to the following: acceleration /deceleration, front crosses, building a strong understanding of flat-work exercises, and developing your skills/mechanics on jumps and tunnels to improve your dog’s responses to your position and motion cues.   • You will learn how to connect all of the “DOTS” (skills you learned in prerequisite classes) to help you and your dog maintain obstacle criteria, lateral distance, desire, and accuracy. You will work on small sequences that will link all of the skills you have learned thus far. You will improve your team’s relationship, understanding, confidence, speed, and overall agility performance. On successful completion of this course, you will be ready for Putting It All Together where you will learn and practice the details of the Derrett Handling System.
    PREREQUISITE: Must have completed Contacts, Jump Grids II, Agility Foundations III: Jump Drills, and have at least 6 straight up weave pole performance.

  • You will expand your comprehension and performance of exercises learned in the Flat Work Exercises and Jump Skills classes by extending them into small 2- to 4-obstacle jump sequences. You will improve your team’s synchronicity, mechanics and understanding and learn to recognize where these skills will benefit you in future classes.   • Does your dog skip poles or have difficulty hitting weave pole entries at speed? Does your dog negotiate weave poles slowly? Would you like to improve your dog's confidence in weave pole execution?  If you answered yes to any of these questions this class is perfect for you and your dog. It will focus primarily on the dog's task of using correct foot placement to properly enter, execute, and complete the weave poles. Various grids inspired by Susan Salo will aid your dog in rehearsing more balance and fluidity in the performance of this obstacle.
